The authors of the Gilded Age were often critics themselves, but of social issues. Literary criticism was a novelty at the time. WebMark Twain, who wrote Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and the Innocents Abroad exemplified this new group of writers, which also included Henry James, who wrote The American, Portrait of a Lady, and the Bostonians. Some American artists also responded to the Gilded Age by adopting Realism.
